Reviewing the features of the Nintendo Wii by Alvin Young
The Nintendo Wii presents itself as the savvy technology that is yet simple and easy to use. It only has a few simple easy to use hardware components. Once assembled the Wii is ready for all the unlimited action you are about to experience.
Upon starting the Wii, the a menu appears. This is the Wii Menu. The Wii menu is the homepage of the Wii system containing all the applications or channels that the system provides or the user has added himself. The Wii pointer on the Wii remote allows the person to navigate between different channels. The Disk Channel is where the user to can go to play the game (provided the disk of that game has been inserted into the system). The Mii Channel is the channel to create the person’s Nintendo Avatar, Mii. The Wii allows the user to extensively customize a person’s Mii, including changing the facial complexion and details. These Miis serve as the avatar of the player online and also as playable characters in many of the Wii Games. The Wii also provides a photo channel for storing photos and an internet channel with Opera as its browser. This allows users to surf the internet via the Wii. Users can also set up their emails through this channel. There is also a provision for adding or downloading other channels like the Netflix Channel or the BBC iPlayer Channel.
The most notable feature of the Wii is its backward compatibility. It can play all game titles of the GameCube and can also take in Nintendo GameCube memory cards and game controllers. GameCube games however cannot be played with the Wii Remote or any other Wii controller. Only the GameCube controller can be used. The online modes of the GameCube games are also disabled when played on the Wii.
Wii impresses, excites, and disappoints
The diverse features of the Nintendo Wii make it an all purpose system. Especially being able to use the internet and check emails as well as even order movies through the Wii system (via Netflix or any movie provider) make this system of great utility.
Despite releasing the Wii, Nintendo hasn’t stopped yet. It is constantly innovating new attachments for the Wii, to enhance the gaming experience. It already has created several attachments for the Wii Remote for specific games like the Wii Wheel for Mario Kart. It is still coming up with more. Nintendo is improving the functions of the Wii Remote and developing the Wii Remote Plus as well the Wii Motion Plus which take motion sensing controls to an all new level.
While a review of the Wii would perhaps comprise mostly of praises and positive feedbacks, there some criticisms for this system. Firstly the Wii menu is aesthetically less impressive than that of the Xbox Dashboard or the Playstation 3 menu. The internal memory to store temporary files is also not much.
